Let Your Light Shine

Matthew 5:16

Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify the father who is in heaven.

Have you ever taken time to think about the lyrics to the song “This Little Light of Mine”?

Harry Dixon Loes is known to have written this children’s hymn in the early 1920’s. This basic youthful song quickly spread and can be heard all over the world in many different languages. As a child, this song filled the halls of Sunday School Worship. Not ever thinking of the deeper meaning, I sang it with joy and confidence.

Years later, I have learned to understand that this song is so powerful and filled with the love and truth of Jesus. In the Scripture above, we are encouraged to “go” and “shine” — go out and be seen. The only stipulation is to do good. The word “good” is translated as nice, kind, and honest. Since that is true, God is asking us to live and be the light that shines on the earth, in our homes, in our churches, and on our jobs.

Ask yourself today — are you willing and available to be light? Are you shining for the world to see and glorify your Father in heaven? This year, this season, take time to pray and seek God. Ask Him to brighten your light.

Your personal application:

  1. Ask God to show you where and when to shine the most.
  2. Are you staying connected to your source of light?
  3. Be intentional about making sure that in everything you do, you’re doing it for the glory of God.
