“Come close to God, and God will come close to you. Wash your hands, you sinners; purify your hearts, for your loyalty is divided between God and the world.” James 4:8 (NLT)
In our society, we use the term “four-foot personal space.” It is the radius around a person that most don’t allow others to come inside of, get close to, become that “close talker,” or have a BFF in their life. We have a variety of reasons “why” we don’t allow that.
Could this year be the year you allow God into your “four-foot personal space?” Has your relationship with Him, so far, been at a distance; has it been surface? In order to get to know another person intimately, both you and that individual must allow each other inside that space. The passage of scripture above promises us that if we “come close” or “draw close” to God, He will, in turn, come close to us. He wants to hear your voice, your heart; He wants to hang out and “do life with you!”
Have you ever invited Him to sit down where you are sitting? Pray this prayer: “Good morning God. Will You come and sit by me and let’s talk? I’ve been wrestling with this issue and I would like to know what You think.”
Deuteronomy 4:7 reminds us, “For what great nation has a god as near to them as the Lord our God is near to us whenever we call on him?” Psalm 73:28 says, “But as for me, how good it is to be near God! I have made the Sovereign Lord my shelter, and I will tell everyone about the wonderful things you do.”
Heavenly Father, help us today to not keep You in our four-foot personal space, but help us to draw near to You, to not be scared, frightened, or embarrassed because of our failures. Be my shelter today, be my encourager. Help me to see others with the same heart that You do. Show me the way to let others into my life, to build trust, and give to others in a positive, life-giving way. In Your name I pray, Amen!
